“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:34-35 NIV

What is love?

1. Love is a command.

“Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another” 2 John 1:6 (NLT)

2. Love is a choice.

3. Love is a commitment.

“ God is love. If we keep on loving others, we will stay one in our hearts with God, and he will stay one with us.” 1 John 4:16 (CEV)

4. Love is a conduct.

“Let us stop just saying we love people; let us really love them, and show it by our actions.” 1 John 3:18 (LB)

Superficial love produces heartbreak; sacrificial love produces wholeness, peace and a place at the table.

He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. Isaiah 53:2-7 NIV

WHAT DOES SACRIFICIAL LOVE LOOK LIKE?

  • Love sacrifices the need to be admired.

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

  • Love sacrifices comforts.

Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering,

  • Love sacrifices for the good of the other.

We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6 NIV

WHAT IS THE PRODUCT OF SACRIFICIAL LOVE?

  • Sacrificial love produces wholeness.

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5 NIV

  • Sacrificial love produces peace.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27 NIV

  • Sacrificial love produces a place at the table.

And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Luke 22:19-20 NIV
