The Weakness of Willpower and the Power of the Resurrection
1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him." 3 So Peter and the other disciple went forth, and they were going to the tomb. 4 The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first; 5 and stooping and looking in, he saw the linen wrappings lying there; but he did not go in. 6 And so Simon Peter also came, following him, and entered the tomb; and he saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the face-cloth which had been on His head, not lying with the linen wrappings, but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed. John 20:1-8 NASB
Key truth- You can’t live life to the FULL with your face covered.
Only the dead have a facecloth.
Contrasting spiritual life and death
1. Dead in sins or alive with Christ.
1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in trans-gressions—it is by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:1-2a; 4-5 NIV
2. Dead to God’s voice or alive to His will.
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. John 5:24-25 NIV
3. Dead to my true purpose or alive to my new self.
It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for. Ephesians 1:11 Message
22b…Put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires 24…Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:22b, 24 NIV
How Can I live without the Cloth?
16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. 17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 18 So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. 2 Corinthians 3:16-18 NLT
